Top Reasons Dryers Stop Spinning: And How Experts Fix Them

Introduction

A dryer that runs: you can hear the motor: but whose drum is not turning is one of the clearest mechanical failure symptoms any appliance can give. Unlike dryers that produces no heat or one that shuts off mid-cycle, a non-spinning drum tells you the problem is almost certainly mechanical rather than electrical or control-related.

The good news is that the most common causes of a dryer drum not spinning are well understood, parts are widely available, and repairs are often completed in a single service visit. Here is what our technicians at DMV Appliance Care typically find.

1. Broken Drive Belt

This is the most common reason a dryer drum stops spinning. The drive belt is a long, thin rubber loop that wraps around the outside of the drum and connects to the motor through an idler pulley. When this belt breaks, the motor continues to run but has nothing to turn.

You can often diagnose a broken belt by opening the dryer door and turning the drum by hand. If it spins with almost no resistance: significantly more easily than normal: the belt is likely broken.

Drive belt replacement involves disassembling the dryer cabinet to access the drum. On many brands, the front or rear panel must be removed. It is a manageable repair for a technician familiar with the brand, typically completed within an hour.

2. Failed Idler Pulley

The idler pulley maintains tension on the drive belt as the drum spins. A seized or broken idler pulley causes the belt to lose tension and slip off the drum. When the pulley seizes completely, the motor may stall, triggering the thermal overload protector and shutting the dryer off.

A failing idler pulley often produces a squealing or squeaking noise in the days or weeks before complete failure. If you hear that sound, have the dryer serviced before the belt breaks from running on a seized pulley.

3. Worn Drum Support Rollers

Most dryers use two or four support rollers at the back of the drum (and sometimes the front) to support the drum’s weight as it spins. These rollers are mounted on shafts and turn freely when functioning normally.

As rollers wear, their surface flattens, they develop flat spots, or the shaft they ride on corrodes. A worn roller creates resistance that the drive belt and motor must overcome. Eventually the roller seizes and the drum slows, stops, or produces a thumping sound with each rotation.

Roller replacement is typically done in sets: if one roller is worn, the others are near the end of their service life as well. Replacing all rollers at the same time is the cost-effective approach.

4. Failed Drum Glides or Slides

The front of the drum rides on plastic glides or slides that allow the drum to rotate smoothly against the front bulkhead. When these glides wear through, the metal drum contacts the metal bulkhead directly, creating friction that can slow or stop drum rotation. The symptom is often a scraping sound from the front of the dryer that worsens over time.

Glide replacement is typically inexpensive and is often done at the same time as roller replacement during a comprehensive drum service.

5. Motor Failure

The dryer motor is more durable than the belt, rollers, and pulleys it drives. However, motors do fail, particularly in older appliances or those that have experienced repeated overheating.

A failing motor may run intermittently, produce a buzzing sound when trying to start, or trip the thermal overload and shut off after a short period of operation. Motor failure is confirmed by testing it independently from other drivetrain components.

Motor replacement is more expensive than belt or roller repair. For an older dryer, the cost of motor replacement may warrant comparing repair cost against replacement cost with your technician before proceeding.

6. Door Switch Failure

This cause is sometimes overlooked because it seems unrelated to the drum mechanically. The door switch is a safety device that cuts power to the drum motor when the dryer door is open. If the switch fails in the open position, the motor receives no power even with the door closed.

You can test this yourself by starting the dryer and then pressing the door switch with your finger while the door is open. If the drum starts turning with the door open when the switch is pressed, the switch has failed.

Door switch replacement is one of the least expensive dryer repairs and can be completed quickly.

How Technicians Diagnose a Non-Spinning Dryer

A trained technician will follow a systematic diagnostic process rather than replacing parts by guesswork.

    • Listen for the motor running: if the motor runs but the drum does not turn, the drivetrain is suspect

    • Open the dryer and turn the drum manually to check belt integrity and roller smoothness

    • Inspect the belt, idler pulley, and rollers visually and by feel

    • Test the door switch with a multimeter

    • Test the motor’s start and run windings if other components check out

Dryer Repair vs. Replacement

Belt, roller, idler pulley, and glide repairs are almost always economical compared to appliance replacement regardless of machine age. These are straightforward mechanical parts with predictable lifespans.

Motor replacement on a dryer more than 10 years old may approach 40 to 50 percent of replacement cost, at which point a technician can help you evaluate which option makes more long-term financial sense.

FAQ’s

If your dryer is not spinning but still producing heat, the most likely cause is a broken drive belt. Other possible issues include worn drum rollers, a failed idler pulley, or a motor problem. A professional dryer repair service can identify the exact cause and recommend the right repair.

The cost of dryer belt replacement depends on the appliance brand and model, but it is generally one of the most affordable dryer repairs. Replacing a worn or broken belt early can help prevent additional damage to other components inside the dryer.

Yes. A dryer motor issue can prevent the drum from turning even if other components are functioning properly. Common signs of motor failure include buzzing sounds, intermittent operation, overheating, or the dryer shutting off unexpectedly. An experienced appliance repair technician can test the motor and determine whether repair or replacement is the best option.
